Interesting facts about the ARTIFICIALIRIS
1. What material is the ARTIFICIALIRIS made of?
The ARTIFICIALIRIS is made of a foldable, highly biocompatible, hydrophobic silicone elastomer that has proven itself in clinical use for two decades. In addition, color pigments and, optionally, a polymer mesh are embedded in the silicone material.
2. Is the ARTIFICIALIRIS an iris lens?
No, the ARTIFICIALIRIS is exclusively an iris implant and is therefore independent of intraocular lenses. As a result, it can be flexibly combined with and implanted alongside various types of intraocular lenses, depending on clinical needs.
3. How big is the ARTIFICIALIRIS?
The ARTIFICIALIRIS is supplied with a total diameter of 12.8 mm and can be trimmed to the required size using trephines. The central, fixed pupil opening measures 3.35 mm. The central thickness is 0.4 mm; at the periphery, the implant is 0.25 mm thick.
4. Can the size of the ARTIFICIALIRIS be adjusted?
Yes, it can be cut to the required size using a trephine.
5. What is the difference between the two model variants?
The ARTIFICIALIRIS is available in two versions: ARTIFICIALIRIS Fiber Free and ARTIFICIALIRIS with Fiber.
The ARTIFICIALIRIS Fiber Free is flexible and can be implanted using an injector through incisions as small as 2.5 mm. This model is particularly well-suited for the treatment of aniridia in cases where suture fixation is not indicated.
The ARTIFICIALIRIS with Fiber model features an embedded polymer mesh to increase mechanical stability (tensile strength). This implant is particularly well-suited for cases where suture fixation is indicated and can be implanted through incisions of approximately 3.2 mm.
6. When and where was the ARTIFICIALIRIS first implanted in a human eye?
The first implantation of an ARTIFICIALIRIS was successfully performed in November 2002 by Professor Hans-Reinhard Koch, M.D., in Bonn.
7. How is the ARTIFICIALIRIS sterilized and shipped?
The ARTIFICIALIRIS is steam-sterilized and comes in a primary container filled with sterile saline solution and sealed. In addition to the standard labeling, the packaging also features an image of the ARTIFICIALIRIS it contains.
8. What is the average delivery time?
Since the ARTIFICIALIRIS CUSTOMFLEX® is a custom-made product, delivery takes approximately four to eight weeks after we receive your complete order, including the evaluated photo prints.
9. Can the ARTIFICIALIRIS be used for cosmetic color changes to the eye?
No, the ARTIFICIALIRIS is not intended for this purpose or for implantation in the anterior chamber in general.
10. Is the standard pupil size of 3.35 mm for the ARTIFICIALIRIS suitable for vitreoretinal procedures?
In principle, yes. For more information, please visit here.
11. What color options are available for ARTIFICIALIRIS?
The ARTIFICIALIRIS is available in two main colors. The ARTIFICIALIRIS SELECT offers predefined color combinations in brown, blue, and green, each available in light, medium, and dark shades, allowing for quick and easy selection.
If no suitable predefined color is found, the ARTIFICIALIRIS CUSTOMFLEX® provides a fully customized solution based on the patient’s natural iris color and structure, delivering extremely realistic results.
12. Are there any special considerations regarding the calculation of IOL power when planning the simultaneous implantation of an IOL and an ARTIFICIALIRIS?
If the IOL was originally calculated for placement in the capsular bag but is instead implanted in the sulcus due to the ARTIFICIALIRIS, an adjustment to the IOL power may be necessary. The degree of adjustment depends on the required IOL power. For further guidance, it is recommended to consult the clinical team when deciding between calculating the IOL power for the capsular bag or the sulcus.
If the IOL is implanted into the capsular bag as originally planned, the influence of the ARTIFICIALIRIS on the positioning of the IOL can usually be compensated for by selecting a slightly myopic target refraction.
