In a healthy eye, the iris controls the amount of light entering the eye via the pupil diameter. When it is bright, the pupil becomes smaller – when it is dark, it becomes larger. In this way, contrasts are perceived well and the depth of field – the simultaneous sharp perception of objects that are close and somewhat further away – is regulated.
