Add-On IOLs are secondary implants that are placed into the sulcus ciliaris in addition to a capsular bag IOL. Our Add-On platform ensures the possibility for refractive “fine-tuning” after cataract treatment in regards of ametropia correction and/ or pseudophakic presbyopia compensation.
Besides their variety, the Add-On IOLs particularly bring the great advantage of reversibility of the procedure. The first implantation of a HumanOptics (formerly Dr. Schmidt Intraocularlinsen) IOL with an Add-On took place in the year 2000, setting new standards compared to the former, outdated “PiggyBack” technique, where both IOLs were implanted into the capsular bag. All our Add-On lenses are especially designed for pseudophakic placement into the sulcus ciliaris.
In most cases Add-On and primary IOL are implanted in two separate procedures. But there might be cases requiring simultaneous implantation of both IOLs, for example with high ametropia to extend power ranges.
