Patients requiring this treatment need to have photos taken of the existing healthy eye and of the defective iris of the fellow eye. HumanOptics experts use these photos in order to exactly transpose the color pattern to the implant (as the target color for production). If the iris is missing in both eyes, the patient can send a picture of their liking as target color for production.

IMplantation of an ArtificialIris

The implantation of this device normally takes about 20 minutes and is done under local anaesthesia. The folded or rolled silicone disc is inserted through a small incision at the corneal rim, then unfolded in the eye and fixed in place.

A more complex implantation, for example involving additional suturing in order to fix the partial prosthesis to the iris remnant, can take up to one hour (and more) and might require a larger incision.

As soon as the eye patch is removed after surgery, the result is immediately visible. The new iris with the fixed pupil can now function as an aperture. The glare decreases significantly and the depth of focus improves. Contrasts between light and dark objects are easily distinguished again and the eye has received a dramatic cosmetic improvement.
